Ojochal

A quiet village scattered across a jungle hillside on the Costanera — famous (quietly) for having the best restaurant scene per capita in Costa Rica, and our pick for the best family base on the southern Pacific coast.

What Ojochal actually is

Ojochal confuses people who expect a beach town, because it isn't one. It's a hillside community a few minutes inland, threaded with steep lanes, with the beaches a short drive below. That layout is exactly why it works for families: you sleep in cooler air above the coast, with toucans instead of beach-bar noise, and drop down to a different beach each morning.

The village's odd superpower is food. A wave of French, Belgian, and Italian expats settled here and opened restaurants wildly out of proportion to the village's size. The practical upshot for parents: you can eat genuinely well every night of a week without repeating, and most places are used to kids at the table.

Weather, honestly

Dry season roughly December–April; green season brings dependable dry mornings and afternoon rain May–November, with September–October the wettest. Plan mornings out, afternoons at the pool, year-round.

Where families stay

Three honest tiers. Hillside villas with pools are the signature stay — knockout views, but confirm the access road and whether your rental car can make it before you book. Village-core casitas trade the view for flat access and walkability. A handful of small hotels split the difference. We only recommend properties by name once they have a specimen card from a stay or inspection.

Local tips

  • Tide chart first, plans second — every good beach day here is tide-timed.
  • One anchor activity per day. Families who schedule more spend the trip in a car.
  • Nothing before 8am except beaches; nothing after dark except dinner.
